John Lee Dumas, the dynamic founder of Entrepreneurs on Fire (EOFire), has revolutionized the podcasting world with his daily interviews featuring successful entrepreneurs. Inspired by his own experiences and the lack of daily entrepreneurial content, Dumas launched EOFire in 2012.
His commitment to consistency and quality has garnered a massive following, making EOFire a go-to resource for aspiring entrepreneurs. In this interview, John shares insights on his journey, strategies for maintaining a robust content schedule, and advice for those looking to dive into the podcasting space.
Inspiration Behind EOFire
SBS – What inspired you to start Entrepreneurs on Fire?
John – I had my “A-ha” moment for podcasting in the summer of 2012. I was working in commercial real estate at the time, which had me driving around in my car A LOT. I would listen to podcasts on my way to and from appointments, specifically ones where the host would interview an entrepreneur and talk about how they built a successful business on their own. The trouble was that the shows that were out at the time were only being published once every week and sometimes only once every other week. I quickly ran out of content to listen to.
I knew I couldn’t be the only one who spent time in my car daily and craved inspiring and educational content. So, I decided to be the change — if I wanted a daily podcast that interviewed successful entrepreneurs, then why not create it myself?
Attracting Initial Listeners
SBS – How did you initially attract listeners to your podcast?
John – I hired a coach — someone who was where I wanted to be — and she introduced me to a lot of successful entrepreneurs, who later became guests on my show. I also joined a podcast mastermind and that was incredibly helpful for making connections in the podcasting space. These relationships were so important for helping me stay on track and grow my podcast the right way.
Because I was interviewing successful entrepreneurs seven days a week and asking all of them to share their interviews with their own audience, I was constantly getting the opportunity to welcome new listeners into my world. This helped me gain initial traction and momentum.
Maintaining a Consistent Content Schedule
SBS – Can you share some key strategies for maintaining a consistent content schedule?
John – I set a schedule for batching my interviews, and I stick to it. So instead of recording interviews throughout the week, one at a time, I record seven interviews back-to-back on a single day. This “batching” method has helped me stay disciplined and maintain my schedule.
Systems have also been key in helping me keep up with publishing a daily interview for going on 12 years now. You have to have systems in place that can help you accomplish the same thing over and over without having to recreate the wheel every time.
Guest Selection Process
SBS – How do you select guests for your podcast?
John – I currently have an application process in place for selecting guests. I send them to a form where they have to share information about themselves and their expertise. If they are selected after submitting an application, then I jump on a five-minute call with them to make sure they’re a good fit for the show.
Jumping on video calls has been really helpful because I can pretty much tell right away whether the individual has the knowledge, expertise, and energy to serve my audience.
Traits of Successful Entrepreneurs
SBS – What are some common traits of the most successful entrepreneurs you’ve interviewed?
John – Discipline, focus, and the ability to fail fast. Successful entrepreneurs aren’t afraid to fail because they know that every experience is a learning experience that can help them get to the next step.
Common Entrepreneurial Challenges
SBS – What are the most common challenges faced by entrepreneurs that you have interviewed?
John – Gaining traction early on and getting new customers seem to be common struggles for entrepreneurs.
Advice for New Podcasters
SBS – What advice would you give to someone starting a podcast today?
John – Be unique. You have to niche down and serve a specific audience that has a very specific pain point and you have to become the best solution to their problems. It’s not enough to just launch a show on entrepreneurship or marketing. NICHE DOWN!
Favorite Tools and Resources
SBS – What are some of your favorite tools and resources for entrepreneurs?
John – Boomerang for Gmail, Text Expander, Google Drive, Facebook, The Freedom Journal, Asana — just to name a few!
Staying Motivated and Productive
SBS – How do you stay motivated and productive on a daily basis?
John – I know that in order to accomplish my mission of inspiring millions of people to take their entrepreneurial leap and achieve financial and lifestyle freedom, I need to continue serving them with inspiring content that can help them take the next step.
Future Trends in Entrepreneurship
SBS – What trends do you see shaping the future of entrepreneurship?
John – AI is, of course, top of mind for many people. There are so many developments happening so quickly that it will be very interesting to see what AI does over the next few years.
Memorable Interviews and Lessons
SBS – Can you share a particularly memorable interview and what you learned from it?
John – After conducting over 4,500 interviews, it’s tough to choose one. But I always love my chats with Tony Robbins, and Barbara Corcoran was an early interview that I really enjoyed. Barbara is so inspiring and such a go-getter. She never let anything stand in the way of accomplishing what she wanted most.
Balancing Work and Personal Life
SBS – How do you balance work and personal life as an entrepreneur?
John – You have to create strong boundaries. I have a cut-off time when my computer is shut down and I’m not online. This is my time to relax and be with my family. Without those boundaries and having habits in place that help you unplug, it’s easy to get stuck in constantly working. So, set the boundaries and start maintaining the habits that work for you to make sure you have time for yourself and your family.
Future Plans for EOFire and Personal Brand
SBS – What are your future plans for EOFire and your personal brand?
John – I plan to continue growing the brand the same way I have for 12 years now. I love interviewing successful entrepreneurs and serving my audience, Fire Nation. I’m excited to continue sharing the valuable insights my guests have to share on a daily basis!
